visiting Maryland's most popular beach
One of America's favorite seaside spots is Ocean City, Maryland.
Ocean City is often referred to as "The East Coast's Number One Family Resort" for its famous historic boardwalk, white sandy beaches, amusement parks and more.
The lower numbered streets of Ocean City represent the historic part of the town, where Victorian cottages and cedar shake turn-of-the-century charmers abound. There is a plentiful share of motels for inexpensive family travel as well, and you can rent a room right above the boardwalk overlooking the ocean for relatively little.
As you travel north on the main beach avenue, you'll find a rise in the height of the buildings- more national hotel chains, and in the higher streets, a number of high rise condominium buildings. Although most condominiums are privately owned, most can be rented for weekly rates. Ocean City is also a wonderful place to visit in the off-season, as fall, winter and spring are uncrowded and pretty.
The Boardwalk in Ocean City features an excellent amusement park with tons of rides for the kids, the best boardwalk french fries in the world - dip in vinegar and Old Bay- at Thrasher's (since 1929), amazing warm caramel popcorn at Fisher's (since 1937) and out-of-this-world salt water taffy and fudge at Dolle's (since 1910).
You can eat your way down the Boardwalk all night! Don't forget to pick up a tshirt at M.R. Duck's- it's an Ocean City tradition, and a collectible!
Besides the Boardwalk, Ocean City Maryland also offers a fantastic amusement park at Jolly Roger. There is a water park, miniature golf course, kiddie rides and lots of games; it's an excellent way to spend the day with the family if you need a break from the hot sand. There are dozens of other miniature golf courses in town as well- choose from pirate, ocean creature, fantasy and other fun themes as you putt your way around town! There's even a cool skateboard park and an under-21 dance club, if you find yourself traveling with an antsy teenager or two!
Ocean City, Maryland offers not only the Beach and Boardwalk, but also plenty of outlet shopping, family activities, historic sites and museums, festivals, watersports, fishing, cruises, golf, great dining, birdwatching and more.
