Hancock House in Pasadena, Maryland offers a look at what life was like in Colonial times.
People who have been wondering how American people really lived in Colonial times may want to visit Hancock's Resolution. This little house was preserved as much as possible through the last several hundred years. In fact, the last owners lived in Hancock's Resolution until the mid 1900's with no electricity. Today, the building is still not electrified. Hancock's Resolution, also known as Hancock House, is located in Pasadena, Maryland, right outside of the charming Bayside Beach community. People who tour the house may want to wait until there is an event going on at the same time, because taking a tour of this charming little building does not take a great deal of time, even though the docent tells stories about the home's history as the visitors move from room to room. Things to See at Hancock HouseAnyone who has any interest in gardening will want to take time to visit the gardens, which are grown as authentically as possible. A Master Gardener has restored the front garden and the kitchen garden and has used many plants that were growing in neglected garden areas on the property in the newly restored garden beds. The fields beyond the kitchen garden are also planted with period crops, such as Indian corn and strawberries. The old milk house was built in 1785 and is still in beautiful shape. The root cellar and beehive are two other things of interest visitors will want to look for. The kitchen attached to the house, known as the new kitchen because it was a modern 1850's addition, has several antique displays in it and seems a bit like a museum. There are several paths to explore around the house, but guests are warned to hike at their own risk and are encouraged to use tick repellent. One of these paths leads to the main cemetery for the Hancock family. Hancock's Resolution Gift ShopSometime around the early 1900's, Hancock's Resolution had a small store on the farm grounds. Today, it has been restored into a gift shop that carries items related to Hancock's Resolution or its past, such as Chicksaw Plum Jelly. How to Visit Hancock's ResolutionHancock's Resolution is closed from November to March and usually is only open on Sundays during the rest of the year. It is best to call the house at 410-255-4048 to be sure it is open and to find out whether admission is being charged that day before driving out for a tour. For homeschool parents who want to bring colonial history alive for their children or people who just enjoy touring historic homes, Hancock's Resolution is a great place to visit. Combine this historic home tour with a special beekeeping or sheep shearing demonstration and enjoy a day of history that has come to life.
